A dual winner last season, Sneddy Eddie scored for the first time since joining Noel Kelly when leading close home under Patrick McGettigan to take the Societies Welcome At Gowran Park Golf Club Handicap.

Well away from stalls, McGettigan had the perfect position in the box seat, as Jimmy Dalton took them along aboard Poppadom

The latter quickened from the front over a furlong out but that move was covered by McGettigan, who went second on Sneddy Eddie.

Getting to the leader over 200 yards out, the eventual winner had to work hard before eventually getting up in the dying strides to win by a neck.

“He’s always been a horse that needed soft ground, looking at his form. He got it today and we fancied him,” said Kelly.

“He was down to 50 and he was claiming 7lb off him today. He seems like a very nice wee jockey, he’s a good lad. I’ve started using him a bit recently. He’s a good rider and does what he’s told.

“This horse can’t handle a fast surface. We ran him once in Dundalk last year and he didn’t handle the surface at all. He needs a cut in the ground.

“He’s a fine wee horse. He is what he is, he’s moderate, but he’ll do a job.

“We left home this morning at 8am, we fed him at 6.30. He deserved to win a wee race for us.”
