Tom Madden became the latest member of a famous racing family to ride a winner when just getting Susiescot home in a terrific finish to the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Handicap.

The 16-year-old, a son of Boots and brother of Slippers, has inherited the nickname Socks and was seen to great effect on the four-year-old grey filly.

Susiescot (15/2) and Morga (6/1) had the mile event between them in the final furlong, and came close as it developed into a desperate finish.

The photo-finish print showed that the Willie McCreery-trained filly had just prevailed by a nose, with a yawning six and a half length gap back to Ravello Again (10/1) in third.

Madden was having just his sixth ride under rules, although he partnered about 30 winners on the pony racing circuit including this year’s Dingle Derby.

McCreery said, “Tom’s mother Patricia is a first cousin of mine, so it’s a great family win. The 10lb claim made a huge difference as she’s small. She backed out (slowly away) on her last two starts and Tom said to try her in cheek-pieces today and she jumped out lovely. He was strong in the finish.

“She has a heart of gold and will run at Navan on Wednesday over a mile and two furlongs.”
