Softly stung by Barefoot Lady

Aidan O'Brien's Sing Softly was beaten a neck by Barefoot Lady (14/1) in the Group 3 Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes at Newmarket this afternoon.

The Ballydoyle filly was sent off the 9/4 favourite having won both her previous outings this term but had no answer to the late challenge of Paul Hanagan's mount Barefoot Lady.

Sing Softly responded well to Ryan Moore's urgings to lay down a strong challenge on the fastest ground that she's encountered to date despite drifting towards the far side rail in the closing stages.

Maqaasid (4/1) appeared to be travelling best of all as they entered the final quarter of a mile but she couldn't respond in the closing stages and was a further three quarters of a length back in third.

Successful trainer Richard Fahey said: "She's only slight, but Paul said they don't come much tougher. I've got to have a proper chat with the owner about supplementing for the (1000) Guineas, but he is keen.

"There was a question mark today about the trip but on that display, she should stay a mile. I've had a runner in the Oaks before, but never in the Guineas. We're not used to this!"
