St Nic back on track

St Nicholas Abbey went a long way to restoring his wounded reputation with an electric display in the Boodles Diamond Ormonde Stakes.

Aidan O'Brien's colt looked to have the world at his feet with a brilliant performance in the 2009 Racing Post Trophy, but he was beaten into sixth when a red-hot favourite for the 2000 Guineas a little over a year ago.

His recent comeback third at the Curragh did not inspire much confidence, either, but the 11-8 chance travelled strongly throughout this one-mile-five-furlong Group Three encounter.

Even-money favourite Harris Tweed led the field rounding the turn for home, but St Nicholas Abbey picked him up with ease and fairly flew through the final furlong to record an impressive nine-length victory under Ryan Moore.

Moore said: "He gave me a lovely feel. He was very settled and very relaxed."

Allied Powers came from the rear to fill the runner-up spot, but the race revolved around St Nicholas Abbey.

Moore added: "It wasn't a very nice race to ride in as we went quick and then slowed down and then went quick again, but he just did everything smoothly.

"It was a bad race, but he gave me a nice feel."
