Sent off 11/2 in Dundalk's Irish Stallion Farms EBF Star Appeal Stakes, Joga Bonito produced a gritty performance to win in the colours of Tony Bloom, who owns the grey son of Territories in partnership with Ian McAleavy. .

Billy Lee set out to make all on the Galway festival maiden winner in the Listed seven-furlong contest, with the 6/4 favourite Salt Lake in his slipstream.

Racing to the final furlong, the pair drew clear of their rivals and the market leader soon closed. Salt Lake disputed the lead briefly 100 yards out before Joga Bonito found again to score by a neck.

Trainer Paddy Twomey

"He has improved all year, and I'd say gelding has brought about more improvement, said winning trainer Paddy Twomey.

"He's a horse that will progress well next year. That would be it for this year.

"He seems to handle the surface.

"I think he ran very well in Roscommon, and he probably had two races, he had to run against one horse first and then a second horse. I'd say he has got stronger since.

"He does what he has to do hence the cheekpieces, but Billy knows him well."
