Stewarts House scores on first start for Vaughan

On his first start for Welsh trainer, Tim Vaughan, the ex-Arthur Moore trained Stewarts House made a successful debut at Newton Abbot yesterday.

The 9yo son of Overbury looked a smart prospect at the beginning of his career but never realised his full potential, only winning two races from his twenty five starts for Moore.

However in the feature Listed, Lord Mildmay Memorial Handicap Chase at Newton Abbot yesterday, he showed his true colours winning by an easy six lengths under Richard Johnson.

Sent off at 8/1 he led before three out and was driven clear after the last, running out a comfortable winner over the former Eoghan O'Grady trained Life Of A Luso back in second at 16/1

Hoo La Baloo for Paul Nicholls was a further neck back in third at 10/1, while the 3/1 favourite. Mamlook for David Pipe could only manage sixth.

After the race Vaughan said of his gelding, who he bought at the Doncaster May Sales: "I'm delighted with him, it was his first run for us and we were fortunate enough that the ground was on the easy side.

"He had a lovely clean run through and it's great for the owners.

"He looks a nice, big, impressive horse and hopefully he can go on from that.

"I don't know what we'll do next, there is a Listed chase at Market Rasen at the end of September.

"That could possibly be on the agenda or we may give him a soft palate operation.

"Richard (Johnson) said he was a little bit thick in his wind today, so we may do that and bring him back for Cheltenham's October meeting. It will be one or the other.

"The owners bought him to give them some days out. He's a higher-rated horse than we traditionally buy, a horse with proven form.

"He's won today so he has to keep going for those sort of races now."
