Sunriseontheboyne (22/1) was the aptly-named and local winner of Navan’s Royal County Premier Handicap today, bagging the €45,000 race for owner/trainer Mick Mulvany and jockey Wesley Joyce.

Successful in three of six runs on the all-weather at Dundalk, Sunriseontheboyne today scored a second success on turf when benefitting from an enterprising front-running ride.

Runner-up Dakota Blue strongly pressed the winner in the closing stages but failed by a short-head at the line.

Mulvany said "he's (Joyce) not bad, although I thought he was actually going a bit too fast!

"Everybody has been saying he wasn't staying, but we knew he stayed. I think we were done for a little bit of toe the last day, so decided we weren't going to let that happen today.

"He has been coming out well out of stalls, so the plan was to make the running, kick on two-and-a-half or three furlongs down and see if we could get home. It was nice to get it and is a lovely pot at our local track."

The River Boyne passes though Navan town.
