Sussex attracts star milers

Most of Europe`s top milers are among the 69 entries - 17 more than last year - revealed today for the Group One Champagne Lanson Sussex Stakes at Goodwood on August 1st.

Entries for the stg£275,000 contest include a particularly strong team from the Classic generation.

Vodafone Derby favourite Golan, Noverre and Black Minnaloushe, respectively winners of the English, French and Irish 2000 Guineas are all engaged, as are Ameerat, Rose Gypsy and Imagine, successful in the fillies` equivalents.

Champion trainer Aidan O`Brien, who won his first Sussex Stakes last year with the Giant`s Causeway, accounts for no less than 24 entries.

These include Irish Guineas winners Black Minnaloushe and Imagine as well as Derby second favourite Galileo.

There have been four post-war French-trained winners of the race and Keltos, successful in the Listed Prix de Pontarme for trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias at Chantilly on Tuesday, could bid to add to the total.

The unbeaten Dandoun, a Listed winner at Kempton on Saturday, represents local trainer John Dunlop as does Olden Times, who is set to contest Sunday`s Prix Jean Prat at Chantilly.

Godolphin, successful in the 1999 renewal with Aljabr, have 11 representatives this time including Noverre.

The John Gosden-trained Observatory, winner of last year`s Queen Elizabeth II Stakes from Giant`s Causeway, made a successful start to his 2001 campaign in the Prix d`Ispahan at Longchamp.

While Medicean, winner of last year`s Celebration Mile, also began this season with a victory at the highest level in Newbury`s Lockinge Stakes.

Medicean and Golan`s trainer Sir Michael Stoute, who has three previous Sussex Stakes wins (1998 Among Men, 1989 Zilzal, 1986 Sonic Lady), has a strong hand that includes Tough Speed, current ante-post favourite for the Royal Hunt Cup, and Regal Rose, winner of last season`s Cheveley Park Stakes.

Henry Cecil, the race`s most-successful trainer with five successes, is represented by the lightly-raced but very-promising Shibboleth.
