TOP AUSTRALIAN TRAINER KILLED

One of Australia`s top trainers, Peter Hayes, was killed today when the plane in which he was a passenger crashed, police said.

Hayes, 52, a member of one of Australia`s great horse racing dynasties was killed when the Lancair kit-built plane plunged into sand hills near Mildura, killing both men aboard.

A member of staff at the Hayes family`s Lindsay Park stud at Angaston in South Australia`s Barossa Valley confirmed Hayes` death in the crash.

Hayes has been the leading trainer in Victoria and South Australia for three of the past five years.

The Hayes family has long dominated racing in the southern states.

Peter`s younger brother David initially ran their father`s family stud, Lindsay Park until he left Australia to train in Hong Kong in 1995.

He trained 13 Group One winners, his greatest moment coming with Blackfriars in the 1999 Victoria Derby, just months after the death of his father.
