Termagant Good on her Debut

Velvet Flicker carried the colours of Mrs. Kevin Prendergast to victory here in a juvenile maiden at the end of last month and her stablemate, the debutante, Termagant made an impressive start to her career to cause a 14/1 surprise in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Fillies Maiden.

An initial winner on this side of the world for the freshman stallion, Powerscourt, Declan McDonogh's mount led about a furlong out before going on to eclipse Cabaret by two lengths.

Prendergast said: "I wasn't surprised at all, I've always thought she was quite useful. She has a nice pedigree, there is a champion grass horse in America on her page (Vanlandingham). She'll definitely get a mile and a quarter or a mile and a half eventually. She was bought for some clients who then pulled out. We gave E34,000 for her and despite the recession, she is worth a bit more now."
