The Goffer dug deep to run out a game winner of the featured Michael Purcell Memorial Novice Hurdle at Thurles this afternoon.

Gordon Elliott 's charge was dropping back in trip having been fourth behind stablemate Gerri Colombe over two-miles-seven at the course last month.

The Yeats gelding tracked front-runner Ferdia in today's Grade 3 contest, over an extended two-and-a-half miles, before moving up to dispute four from home.

There were plenty in with chances jumping the second last as The Goffer took a narrow lead.

11/8 favourite Captain Conby looked a big danger as he travelled well on his girth but got under the last and didn't pick up on the run-in.

5/2 shot The Goffer (5/1 this morning) in contrast found plenty for Jordan Gainford and went on to post a length-and-a-quarter success as Berkshire Royal stayed on for the runner-up spot.

The winning rider said afterwards:- "I found out this morning I was getting the ride as Davy is sidelined but hopefully only for a few days.

"I spoke to him on the way down and he said he ran a solid race the last day and he told me he might lack a gear dropping back in trip. Davy is never too far wrong, and in fairness to the horse he battled well today.

"He idled a small bit but had plenty left and did it well. He is a big horse who will improve in time."
