Lisa Williamson said no one at her Cheshire yard had a penny on shock 200-1 Catterick scorer The Stony Baker , despite the trainer always believing the colt was “a machine”.

The Stony Baker was given a good ride from Kevin Stott to land the Racing To School EBF Maiden Stakes over the minimum trip at the North Yorkshire track on Tuesday, holding off the challenge of 11-10 favourite Cyberspace to win going away.

While Williamson celebrated only a fourth winner of the current Flat season for her 17-horse Cheshire operation, she admitted they will not be doing it with the bookies' money.

“‘No' is the short answer! We didn't have any money on, but that's racing for you isn't it? We have always really, really liked this horse though. Smooth Silesie (half-sister) did very well for us and won nine races and we always thought this horse was a bit of a machine to be honest.”

The Stony Baker had run twice before and beaten just one horse home in races at Chester and Southwell, at odds of 200-1 and 500-1 – but dropping back in trip proved a masterstroke.

“We are a small yard and we only go out in twos or threes so they are not out in big strings and it may be a bit of a shock to our horses when they first go to the races. But with him I think the penny has dropped today.

“I told the owner I'd like to drop him back to five because I think he is speedy. He is very talented, Kevin gave him a great ride and it wasn't a fluke as he was going away at the finish.”

Williamson is developing a bit of a habit of pulling big-priced rabbits out of the hat with the stable's three-year-old Lc Tiffen an 80-1 winner at Haydock in early August and Golden Mabel obliging at odds of 40-1 at Ffos Las 12 days later.

“Our horses always go off at those sorts of prices,” said Williamson. “But results like this are nice for a small yard. You need better horses to win races and we only have a handful. We work hard, love our horses and he is a colt to look forward to.”
