Toomey's recovery continues

Brian Toomey "continues to show positive signs of recovery" from serious head injuries he suffered in a fall at Perth on July 4.

The young rider was hurt when the Lisa Harrison-trained Solway Dandy fell heavily three out in the Book Now For 2014 Perth Festival Conditional Jockeys' Handicap Hurdle.

His progress is such that he was transferred at the weekend from Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, where he underwent an operation to reduce swelling on his brain a few days after his fall, to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

"Brian Toomey continues to show positive signs of recovery following his transfer from Dundee to the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough last weekend where he is due to start a rehabilitation programme," Lisa Hancock, CEO of the Injured Jockeys Fund, said on the fund's website.

Toomey's close friend and fellow jockey Brian Hughes, who visited him twice over the weekend, said: "Brian's in good form and is walking and talking and doing everything normally.

"He recognises everybody and seems to be himself which is brilliant."

Toomey is attached to the North Yorkshire yard of Kevin Ryan, and is the partner of the trainer's daughter, Amy.
