Thursday’s card at Leopardstown sees some of the best two-year-olds trained in Ireland do battle.

The highlight is two Group 3s for two-year-olds, races which have historically produced some of the biggest names in Irish racing.

In the past 10 years, these two races have produced Classic-winning horses like Love, Churchill and Anthony Van Dyck.

    O’Brien can continue to dominate

Gavin Cromwell is standing out in recent years as a master at training top-class jumpers and top-class flat horses. And his two-year-old filly Brownstown is expected to improve again from her impressive victory at Leopardstown. She was always prominent in her debut effort and kept on well.

But Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore have a strong record in the race; the pair has won this contest for the past three seasons. Furthermore, Aiden O’Brien has saddled the winner of this race 14 times; so it’s no surprise to see him represented here again this time by a daughter of Wootton Bassett called Composing.

Composing improved drastically in her two career runs so far. On debut she finished fifth and roughly five lengths behind Balantina but that form is strong as Balantina was last seen finishing a good third in the Group 3 Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot. She also finished behind Cape Sounion who was a close second to Balantina that day.

However, Composing was then able to improve from that effort on her next start at the Curragh, where she was prominent early in the race and kicked clear inside the final furlong.

She reversed the form with Cape Sounion, and there should still be more improvement to come.

    Father and Son do battle

Remarkably, Aidan O’Brien has won this race 16 times, fielding eight of the past 10 winners. And he has a strong hand here again with Flushing Meadows.

This son of Wootton Bassett was last seen finishing a close second in a Group 3 at the Curragh. He was narrowly beaten by a short head to a promising filly trained by Dermot Weld called Suzie Songs who had a 3lb allowance over him that day.

Now back on level weights with his rivals, he should improve for that experience and be very hard to beat.

The main danger is North Coast. Trained by Joseph O’Brien, he ran well in a Listed race last time out to finish second, roughly three lengths behind the winner.

But the pair have already met on debut at the Curragh, where Flushing Meadows comfortably beat North Coast by roughly three lengths.

Flushing Meadows is expected to confirm the form from that run here.
