Custers Mistake (6/1) routed his rivals to win Wexford’s Fleadh Cheoil Wexford Handicap Hurdle today, as the gelding credited his northern-based trainer Ross Tumilty with a second career success.

Initially owned by Coolmore-supremo John Magnier and trained by the late Kevin Prendergast, the eight-year-old today skipped clear of his rivals in the home straight under Darragh McGill to score easily, by 9.5 lengths from Club Manager

Winning owner Brendan McNeill reported "we were confident coming here after his run the last day. He's coming back to the form of the day when he won in Downpatrick.

"Ross trains near Lisburn and I'm from Forkhill. It took us two-and-a-half hours to get down here but anyone would come down for that!

"This has opened up plenty of options. He could go over fences but I'll have to sit down with Ross and see."

Tumilty later added: "He'll probably get a bit of a hike for that. I just got my Flat licence granted and I might try him on the Flat as he is bred for it. We'll see how he comes out of this.

"It's all new to me, as I've only a had a few to run and he's been a really good servant.

"I got him around two years ago and while he'd won a couple of point-to-point's, he'd never won on the track. The way he won today is how he has always felt at home, so I'm just really, really happy that he was able to show it.

"Recently he ran a couple of times and was disappointing. I love him and he's like a child to me.

"I've just one other for the track at the moment and I've a couple of point-to-pointers to come in as well.

"I've had one point-to-point winner and I've a nice four-year-old and a nice five-year-old to come in as well, neither have ran before. I've got good support from my uncles and my family, buying horses for me.

"I've had horses all my life, showjumping and eventing. I work as a farrier and I ride out for different people as well. I shoe for Stuart Crawford and I shod for Gordon Elliott for a long time as well.

"I'm in the Lisburn, Newry area and Leah Knight and Michael Dobbs have been a massive help to me, as they own the yard (Danescroft Equestrian Centre) I work out of. If I'm not around they'll feed the horses and do whatever."
