Vermeer taken out of Lockinge

The Aidan O'Brien-trained Jan Vermeer was the sole absentee as 10 were declared for the JLT Lockinge Stakes at Newbury on Saturday.

Richard Hannon's highly-talented pair Canford Cliffs and Dick Turpin head the runners.

Canford Cliffs makes his eagerly-awaited seasonal return after completing a hat-trick of Group One successes in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood last July.

Dick Turpin, who defeated his stablemate in the first two of their three meetings to date, made a winning reappearance in the bet365 Mile at Sandown last month.

Henry Cecil's 10-furlong specialist Twice Over drops back to a mile for the first time since finishing third in this race two years ago.

The three-times Group One winner is owned by Prince Khalid Abdullah, who is also represented by Cityscape. Roger Charlton's charge was second to Dick Turpin at Sandown.

There is an Italian challenger in the shape of the Group Two-winning four-year-old Worthadd, trained by Vittorio Caruso.

Clive Cox has declared both Balthazaar's Gift and Beacon Lodge, though the latter will only run if the ground is suitable.

The Godolphin-owned Shakespearean will only run if there is sufficient rain, while Chris Wall's stalwart Premio Loco and Red Jazz, from the Barry Hills-stable complete the list.
