Vincent Finegan on Sean Bowen's stats: 'He’s an incredible young man. I can’t believe what he’s doing'

Sean Bowen has established himself as one of the leading National Hunt jockeys in Britain and is enjoying the standout season of his career.

Still relatively young, he has already ridden well over 1,000 winners and recently passed the 200-winner mark in a single campaign which is a remarkable achievement, especially with jockeys now restricted to one meeting per day.

What makes Bowen particularly impressive is that he hasn’t built his numbers simply by riding short-priced favourites. He partners horses for a wide range of trainers and often outperforms their usual strike rates when he’s on board.

That suggests he’s adding value rather than just steering obvious winners. Strong in a finish, tactically sharp, and willing to travel the length of the country for rides, he has become the go-to jockey for several major yards.

Speaking on this week’s irishracing.com’s Irish Angle Vincent Finegan talks about Bowen: "He’s an incredible young man. I can’t believe what he’s doing. What’s amazing is he hasn’t ridden a Cheltenham winner yet, which seems astonishing considering how well he’s been doing in the UK.

"He’s ridden over a thousand winners. The other thing that really stands out is he’s not riding “steering jobs” like Ruby Walsh would have back in his day, or Tony McCoy riding all those hotpots you’d expect to win."

Stats Don’t Lie

Given his trajectory, it seems only a matter of time before he breaks his Cheltenham duck. Bowen combines hunger with professionalism and he now firmly belongs in any conversation about the top jump jockeys in Britain and Ireland.

Vincent Finegan added: "What’s extraordinary when you look at his stats is that he’s riding at a 25% strike rate this season. But when you break it down by stable, his percentage for those yards is often well above their overall strike rate. For example:

* Olly Murphy: 21% overall, 25% when Sean Bowen rides.

* James Owen: 24% overall, 37% with Bowen.

* Gordon Elliott (UK runners): 25% overall, 46% with Bowen.

* Nick Scholfield: 18% overall, 66% with Bowen."

Behind Every Great Man

Despite the demands of being a top jockey which involves long hours, travel, and high-pressure races, Bowen has credited his wife with helping him stay focused and balanced throughout his journey to the top of National Hunt racing.

Bowen returned to the saddle just two days after his wedding, scoring a double at Perth, reflecting his commitment to racing.

This personal milestone came during one of the most successful seasons of his career, having recently been crowned British Champion Jump Jockey.

His marriage, combined with his professional achievements, marked 2025 as a landmark year for Bowen.
