Waldgeist holds Coronet in Saint-Cloud thriller Waldgeist narrowly outpointed John Gosden’s mare Coronet in a thrilling climax to the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Following Group Three and Group Two triumphs at Longchamp and Chantilly respectively, Waldgeist was a hot favourite to secure a second win at Group One level and provide trainer Andre Fabre with an eighth Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud success. Outsider Oriental Eagle took the field along for a long way before fading in the home straight, after which the Sylvester Kirk-trained Salouen briefly hit the front in his bid to go one better than when runner-up to Gosden’s Cracksman in the Coronation Cup a month ago. However, he was claimed in the last half-furlong by both Waldgeist under Pierre-Charles Boudot and Frankie Dettori aboard Coronet, who was bidding to follow up her comeback victory in the Middleton Stakes at York. The two passed the post almost as one, but the judge confirmed Waldgeist had won the day by a nose. Salouen was a clear third.
