Walsh records success down under

Katie Walsh rode her first winner in Australia when partnering Shinko Dancer to victory in the Cleanevent Aus vs Ireland Hurdle at Morphettville's Allan Scott Park in Adelaide earlier today.

The amateur was also named rider of the meeting after coming from off the pace on the 5/4 favourite to record an easy three-and-a-quarter length victory over top Melbourne rider Stuart Pateman.

"He jumped as well as he could but missed out one or two. I knew from a long way out that I was going best. It's just fantastic to ride a winner in Australia," said Walsh.

Alain Cawley and Shane Jackson finished fourth and fifth on Mephistopheles and Sallum, the first two home in last Wednesday's opening leg of the series at Gawler. Nina Carberry finished last of the eight runners.

In the Cleanevent Aus vs Ireland Steeple, Katie, partnering odds-on favourite Isti Bee, failed by a long head against Wheel The Lead ridden by Adam Trinder.

She might just have won but for a bad mistake at the second last; "The horses are inclined to get in too close to the fences and gallop out through them, but I didn't lose too much ground and it was probably the weight difference that beat me in the end."

Shane Jackson finished a points gathering third on the winners stable companion Stop The Traffic but Nina Carberry's Ego Trip broke down. The points table reads 38 each for both teams with Melbourne beckoning next week.
