Waltzing Matilda takes Belmont by storm Waltzing Matilda secured a shock success for the Tommy Stack team in the Grade Two New York Stakes at Belmont on Friday evening. The four-year-old was a winner on her debut at Leopardstown back in April 2014 but had not hit the target in 10 subsequent starts. However, partnered by Junior Alvarado at the New York track, Waltzing Matilda chased down the pacesetting Kitten's Queen before repelling Eastern Belle by three-quarters of a length in the 10-furlong heat. Fozzy Stack, the trainer's son and assistant, said: "The faster they went for us, the better. They didn't go that fast and she got a good break there off the lane." Favourite and multiple Grade One-winning Stephanie's Kitten was only fourth and Alvarado hailed his mount's attitude. He said: "As soon as I hit the three-eighths pole, I knew I had a ton of horse and started working my way through. "Every time I asked her, she was there to help me. We turned for home, I put her in the clear, and that was it."
