Ward considers No Nay Never options Trainer Wesley Ward would rather run No Nay Never in the Jersey Stakes at Royal Ascot, rather than the St James's Palace Stakes, before a tilt at the July Cup. The three-year-old colt lost his 100 per cent record in the Swale Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Saturday when beaten by Spot over seven furlongs. Having helped set speedy fractions early, he faded fairly tamely on his first run at the distance, with Ward left disappointed by the defeat, and the Prix Morny winner could now remain over seven furlongs for the Jersey Stakes, instead of going up to a mile in the St James's Palace in June. Ward also believes No Nay Never, who claimed the Norfolk Stakes at last season's Royal meeting, will be suited by the demands of Newmarket's July Cup over six furlongs. "He looked a little keen early," said Ward. "I hold him in such high regard and have such high hopes for him for the rest of the year it was disappointing to see him lose as I thought he'd win convincingly. "He ran a great race but to lose was a big let-down. Maybe I didn't have him fit enough. I thought he was ahead of schedule so eased off him for a couple of weeks. "Did we go too quick too early? Could Javier (Castellano, jockey) have backed off him a bit? These are all questions we can ask afterwards. "The horse knows he has lost, his ears were back in the stable and he's a little cheesed off. I'm looking forward now to seeing him vindicate what I feel of him. "We'll still be at Ascot. I love to compete there and he broke the track record in the Norfolk Stakes last year. "I'm not sure if he'll have another run before, the races are spaced out quite evenly and he's always gone well fresh. "I'm thinking of the Jersey Stakes, that would be his target for me, and then the July Cup at Newmarket. He'd stay in England in between those. "The main thing was he came out of the race fine. He sprang a shoe in the race, which also won't have helped, but he came out of it brilliant."
