In the colours of Saorcha Fitzgerald, Well Bud landed Fairyhouse's maiden hurdle over two and a half miles in the hands of Jack Kennedy.

Fifth on hurdling debut at Killarney before finishing runner-up in a Listowel bumper, the Kingston Hill gelding tracked the leaders and moved into contention two out. Last off the bridle was Its Time For A Run , and he led down to the last with Well Bud giving chase on the inner. A peck at the last from the former proved costly and Well Bud took advantage to score by two and a half lengths.

Tactical Switch Pays Dividends

“He's a lovely horse. I think we were getting him wrong, tactically, earlier in the summer,” said McCarthy.

“We changed tactics and he's run a lot better on his last two runs. I thought he was a little bit unlucky in the bumper at Listowel, he got shuffled back and the winner got first run.

“He's a lovely horse going forward and he'll make a nice chaser.

“Jack Kennedy gave him a peach, he's an unbelievable rider and it's great when you can get him.

“Once he's okay in the morning, we'll have a look at what's coming up, but you'd be more looking forward to going chasing with him next summer.”
