Last One Standing is a favourite of football fans, often played among friends, family, football clubs and other social groups.

The popular format helps bring supporters together and William Hill have now launched their free version named ‘Final One Standing’ in time for the start of the new Premier League season on Friday, August 15.

  • What is Last One Standing?

The premise is simple. Each player assesses the fixture list and picks a team to win before every match day. If their prediction fails and that side doesn't win, they are eliminated from the competition.

If the player's tip wins, they continue to the next week, but then they cannot repeat that selection. For instance, if a punter opts for Liverpool and they beat Bournemouth in the Premier League, they are unable to go for the Reds again until the game restarts, meaning the deeper they progress, the tougher and more potentially decisive the selections become.

Competitors get whittled down every week before the winner emerges and is declared the 'Last One Standing' and the competition can start again.

Football betting is often about passion and feel, but successful players in this format require patience and chess-like vision, with the ability to look at upcoming fixtures and plan a route through the game.

What makes William Hill's Final One Standing different?

William Hill have added an extra edge by launching weekly jackpots, meaning elimination isn't the end of the game, because punters can enter a new one in time for the next match week.

Entry is free and players can get involved in the main version, Public Games, which can be accessed by the Hills' app or website.

There is also the chance to play Private Games between friends, family and social groups, with bettors setting up their own competitions where they can set out their own rules and build rivalries, similar to the traditional manner of the much-loved competition.

Leaderboards will be kept up to date throughout the season so players can track their own and their competitors' progress.

How does William Hill's Final One Standing work?

The start of the game week coincides with the Premier League and will typically begin at 12:30 or 15:00 on a Saturday, although it will be brought forward when required to accommodate Friday fixtures.

That means it is worth taking time to look through the current game week's fixtures and those beyond, allowing bettors to pick the most suitable option available, rather than going for a big name in one of the early matches and missing out on a smaller side who might have an eminently winnable home fixture hidden away on Monday evening.

However, punters are advised to set an alarm to be sure they do not miss their weekly pick, as failing to make a selection in time results in elimination.

Players won't have long to wait, though, as if they fail to get their pick in time, or their selection loses, they will be eligible to enter a new public game once the next round starts.

Private leagues between friends may not be as generous, however!
