There will be no jumping action in Britain today after the meetings at Wincanton and Towcester both fell victim to the cold snap.

Wincanton Clerk of the course Barry Johnson held an initial inspection yesterday and was due to check the course again at 9am.

However, after temperatures dipped well below freezing overnight, he made an earlier call this morning and the meeting has been abandoned.

He said: "We have abandoned as the track is frozen in places. It's still minus 2C now and with that in mind, there's no way it's going to warm up enough.

"We got down to minus 4.5C overnight. If it had been minus 3C we might have had a sporting chance, but it froze for longer last night and there's no chance of the frost coming out in time."

Today's meeting at Towcester has also been abandoned due to a frozen track.

Clerk of the course Robert Bellamy made an early decision to call off the fixture after there appeared little chance of the track being fit for racing.

He said on Wednesday: "We were raceable yesterday but the temperature dropped lower than expected overnight and it's currently minus 2C.

"We have a wind chill of minus 4C today and then the temperature is forecast to fall to minus 3C overnight with a wind chill of minus 9C.

"Tomorrow is forecast to be minus 1C with a wind chill of minus 4C so there's no chance of us being fit to race."
