Not for the first time Mick Winters was the toast of punters at Cork as the local trainer struck with Chatham Street Lad in the Low Low Handicap Hurdle.

The Beneficial gelding had gained his only previous win back in January at this venue, and was backed down from 15/2 earlier in the day to go off the 9/4 favourite.

Luke Dempsey, who was completing a 54/1 plus double having also scored on Derrinross in the Grade 3 Kerry Group Stayers Novice Hurdle, produced the favourite to lead approaching the last before drawing clear on the run-in.

The winning margin was a comfortable six lengths at the line over the front-running Pound A Stroke with Wait Here a further two and a quarter lengths away in third. Geneva Barracks stayed on late to complete the places in fourth.

Winters said, “He loves Mallow, a flat track. We were a bit concerned about the ground but he’s a big, strong horse and the ground was loose. The race worked out lovely for him as they went an even gallop the whole way and he jumped well.

“His two wins now are in Mallow so hopefully we can find something for him here again.”
