The Punchestown Festival is always known for its brilliant racing and crowds, and it will once again play host to the dramatic finale of the Irish trainers’ championship between Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliott.

With only just over €100,000 separating the two powerhouse trainers, the title race is finely poised. It will be fascinating to see if Elliott can finally fulfil his long-held ambition of becoming champion trainer in Ireland.

However, it represents a huge challenge, especially considering that many of Mullins’ top-class Grade 1 winners were deliberately kept away from Aintree in order to arrive at Punchestown fresh and primed for success.

Gaelic Warrior set to emulate Sizing John

This year’s festival promises a series of top-class clashes, starting with the Punchestown Gold Cup. Gaelic Warrior is set to take on his familiar rival Fact To File, renewing their rivalry after previous close encounters.

Gaelic Warrior is also looking to become the first horse since Sizing John in 2017 to complete the prestigious double of winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup in the same season, a remarkable achievement that would firmly cement his place among the greats.

Meanwhile, Fact To File will be aiming to further enhance his own reputation after a stellar campaign that included victory in the Irish Gold Cup.

Can Kopek make amends?

Another key storyline is the anticipated rematch from the Arkle, where the McCarthy family will be hoping Kopek Des Bordes can reverse the form with Kargese. A costly mistake at the final fence last time denied him a historic opportunity, and connections will be confident that a clear round could see him turn the tables.

The Champion Chase division also looks particularly strong, with Il Etait Temps, the Queen Mother Champion Chase winner, set to face Marine Nationale. The latter missed Cheltenham due to injury, but trainer Barry Connell will be hopeful of a big comeback performance, especially given Marine Nationale’s performance in the same race last year

Mouth-watering Champion Hurdle clash

Connell also has William Munny returning to action for the first time since finishing second in the Supreme Novices' Hurdle. He is expected to line up in the Punchestown Champion Hurdle, where Lossiemouth is currently a strong favourite.

However, there could yet be further intrigue if Gordon Elliott decides to run his exciting mare Brighterdaysahead in the race. Her impressive victory at Aintree marked her out as a serious contender, and her participation could have a significant bearing on both the race itself and the wider trainers’ championship battle.

Exceptional Juvenile division

The juvenile division also looks highly competitive, with the 4-year-old hurdle shaping up to be one of the races of the week. Triumph Hurdle winner Apologise De Charnie is set to face a strong field including Proactif Selma De Vary and Saratoga while the expensive recruit Maitin Midi Et Soir adds further intrigue to an already deep contest.

Overall, the Punchestown Festival is set to deliver another outstanding week of racing, with elite-level competition, compelling rivalries, and a championship battle that could go right down to the final race.
