Adelaide beaten by Eagle Top Eagle Top was a hugely impressive winner of the King Edward VII Stakes to give John Gosden a third success of the week at Royal Ascot. Aidan O'Brien's Adelaide was backed almost to the exclusion of everything else as the 6-5 favourite, and everything seemed to be going well when Joseph O'Brien made a move on the bend on the market leader. But William Buick tracked him through and had yet to ask for an effort on the son of Pivotal (12-1), who moved up effortlessly and pulled three and a quarter lengths clear of Adelaide, with Scotland running on into third. Eagle Top, who is related to Oaks winner Sariska, won a Newbury maiden on his racecourse debut yet was beaten in a Leicester handicap last time out, when he apparently had excuses. Buick said: "We've had so much belief in this horse and there were reasons why he ran poorly at Leicester last time. He came here, he didn't turn a hair and was very relaxed. He's got all the attributes of a top, top racehorse. "They went a gallop, as you would expect in a race like this, but he made up a lot of ground in a short space of time. I couldn't believe how easy I got there, really. This horse - you'll be hearing a lot more from him."
