Admiral set for retirement after injury

Compton Admiral is likely to be retired after being ruled out of the Coral Eurobet Eclipse Stakes through injury at Sandown on Saturday.

'He has met with a new tendon injury and we had no option but to scratch him from the Eclipse and more likely he will be retired now. The injury came to light this morning,' said a devastated trainer Gerard Butler today.

'We have waited a year and a half for this and two days before the race it all comes to nothing. It`s absolutely shattering.'

The five-year-old has been restricted to just two races since beating Xaar and Fantastic Light in this race two years ago in the hands of Darryll Holland when a 20-1 shot.

After finishing fifth to Royal Anthem in the Juddmonte International at York the following month, he chipped a bone in his off-fore knee after and suffered a further setback early last year.

Following an operation on the knee which Butler described as 'one last chance', Compton Admiral returned to the racecourse five weeks agoat Newbury after a 21-month absence. And he turned in a most encouraging display when third to Dramatic Quest.
