Sent off 85/40 favourite having been fairly easy to back, the Joe Murphy-trained Alphecca was a decisive winner of the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Killarney.

After two good runs, Alphecca, owned by breeder Gerard Kervick & Crampscastle Bloodstock Ltd, was getting off the mark at the third attempt.

Gary Carroll 's mount was quickly away and led early before being settled in third. Carroll went for a run up the inner early in the straight and the Sioux Nation filly responded well to get through a tight enough gap. In front over two furlongs out, she quickly settled matters and went away to beat Honouramongthieves by five lengths.

Carroll said: "She was coming here off the back of a good run but had missed the break when finishing third the last time at Naas. That rode like a good race and I felt I should have won as we got caught too far back.

"She jumped well today and while it was a messy race early, we went a good gallop and she quickened well. It is great to come and win her maiden."
