Athos set to peak in Northumberland Plate David Wachman is keen for Mount Athos to build upon his fine Chester effort in Saturday's John Smith's Northumberland Plate at Newcastle. New to Wachman this season after a promising spell with John Hills, Mount Athos made a fine start by winning at Dundalk and then finished fourth in the Chester Cup from a stall on the wide outside. He is nearly disputing favouritism for Europe's richest two-mile handicap, and Wachman reported: "Mount Athos will be running on Saturday and we are hoping to have a good chance as the horse has been in good form. "He ran well at Chester last time out and did well to finish where he did considering he had such a poor draw. "The owner, Dr Koukash, and I have planned this race for him and we are very much looking forward to it. "For the future, there are plenty of options and the Melbourne Cup could be one of them."
