Australian rider dies in fall

Australian jockey Simone Montgomerie has died following a fall at the Darwin Cup on Monday. The twenty-six-year-old was riding Riahgrand at Fannie Bay when the horse threw her to the ground in the closing stages. Paramedics treated her at the scene but the Darwin Turf Club confirmed her death at a media conference. It had earlier cancelled the last three races of the day, including the Darwin Cup. Former Godolphin rider Kerrin McEvoy led the tributes to Montgomerie. He told news.com.au: "I'm shattered by the news. I know Simone really well, we actually did pony club together. My condolences go to the Montgomerie family. She's a beautiful girl, it's just a tragedy."
