Elusive Ogie galloped on strongly in the closing stages to spring a 28/1 surprise in the opening Red Mills EBF Auction Maiden Hurdle at Limerick this afternoon. De Temps En Temps went to post a 1/3 shot in the two-miler and cut out the running.

He was headed going to the second last by Elusive Ogie however and despite reaching for the last a bit Eoin McCarthy’s charge kept on well for Darragh O’Keeffe to record a two length win.

The Man’s Room stayed on to take the runner-up prize.

Elusive Ogie had shown some promise on three previous outings this year and had finished sixth on his most recent run at Killarney.

"He is a lovely horse, we bought him as a store for only €4,000 last year and he has a great pedigree, being out of a black-type mare and is a half-brother to a black-type horse,” said McCArthy.

"Denis (Enright, owner) has been with me for years so I rang him and told him I liked this horse so he bought him.

"He was in for under €5,000 today, so had the bare minimum weight and it was a great prize-fund. These races are great, as this horse was also available for any of the big lads to buy.

"At the prices we're paying, these races are a big help although it takes a lot of work to buy them that cheap!"

"He will have a little break now and we'll see then after that."
