betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge Line Ups Announced

Former Liverpool FC boss Roy Evans and ex-jockey turned BBC television presenter Norman Williamson will respectively manage the Great Britain and Ireland teams in the betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge on Saturday, November 20, at Aintree Racecourse.

Alongside the managers, the Great Britain and Ireland teams will be captained by Grand National winning riders Carl Llewellyn and Tony Dobbin. This is the second betfair.com Jockey´s Challenge of 2004, with Britain beating Ireland by 56 points to 38 in the first event at Limerick in July.

The Aintree Challenge - televised live by the BBC - comprises four races worth a total of more than £100,000, culminating in the £50,000 betfair.com Grand Sefton Handicap Chase over the Grand National fences.

The winning team receives the betfair.com Perpetual Trophy while the trainer whose horses score most points will get £1,000 and their yard will receive £2,000. The jockey scoring most points wins dinner, bed and breakfast and a four-ball at a top UK golf course.

Additionally, the trainer and jockey scoring most points will be awarded a £1,000 donation to a charity of their choice.

The scoring is 10 points for a win, 7 points for a second, 5 points for a third, 3 points for a fourth and one point for a fifth place.

Roy Evans, the Great Britain Team Manager, formed an integral part of Liverpool Football Club´s set-up ever since his playing debut in 1969. Having been an important member of the coaching team during a golden era at Anfield, he served as manager from 1994 to 1998 and nurtured the careers of players such as Michael Owen, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman. He also had a spell as Swindon´s manager in 2001.

Evans said: 'I´ve always enjoyed a trip to the races and been to Aintree lots of times - it´s my local track and a really good day out.

'The betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge should be a great day, it´s a nice concept. I know a lot of the jump jockeys already - as it happens mostly the Irish boys like Mick Fitzgerald and Tony McCoy - but I´ll enjoy taking them on.

'It will be good to have Carl (Llewellyn) as my captain and when I managed Swindon I got to know him well. There´ll be some good banter, that´s for sure.'

Norman Williamson, Ireland´s Manager, retired from the saddle in 2003 after partnering 1,268 winners including Master Oats in the 1995 Cheltenham Gold Cup and Alderbrook in the same year´s Champion Hurdle. He never won the Grand National, although he finished second aboard Mely Moss in 2000. As well as running a stud farm in Co Meath, he now presents racing on BBC television.

Williamson said: 'I am excited to be managing the Irish team in the betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge and, after the British riders beat us at home at Limerick in July, fingers crossed that we can turn the tables and come out in front at Aintree.'

Carl Llewellyn and Tony Dobbin are two of the most successful jockeys currently riding. Llewellyn has won the Grand National twice, aboard Party Politics in 1992 and Earth Summit in 1998, while Dobbin landed the world´s greatest steeplechase in 1997 on Lord Gyllene.

Aintree played host to the inaugural betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge 12 months ago and Charles Barnett, the Racecourse´s Managing Director, said: 'Last year´s betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge proved a fantastic success and we´re delighted to be able to build on that this year.'

Josh Apiafi, Director of Field Marketing at Betfair, the world´s largest betting exchange, added: 'The betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge has really captured the public´s imagination and it will add an extra dimension to an already high-class day´s racing at Aintree on Saturday, November 20.'

Last year´s first betfair.com Jockeys´ Challenge at Aintree saw Great Britain beat Ireland by 67 points to 30.
