Peter Fahey is hoping for a “huge run” from The Big Dog in the Bar One Racing Troytown Handicap Chase at Navan on Sunday.

The Mahler gelding made a winning start to his campaign at Limerick last month when getting up late on to land the Munster National and bids for another big staying prize in the prestigious €100,000 contest.

Fahey is hoping to make hay early this season with the nine-year-old who relishes a test of stamina.

He is now rated 148 after his latest win and is within 2lb of the top-weight, Farclas, in Sunday's three-miler.

“I thought he was very impressive that day, for his first run back of the season,” said Fahey in conversation with Dave Keena.

“Keith (Donoghue) got on well with him and gave him a great ride. I'm looking forward to the rest of the season now with him.

“He stays and he jumps and a bit of ease in the ground is definitely a big help to him.

“In the Troytown he'll be up near the top of the weights. It looks a competitive race and hopefully he can turn up on the day and run a huge race.

“This year we were adamant to try and get him forward for races good and early in the season.

“He'll improve away, he's very unexposed and he's lightly raced. I think the weight isn't a problem for him.”
