Big Mojo lands Phoenix Sprint Stakes for Appleby Former Group One winner Big Mojo benefitted from a drop in class when landing the FBD Hotels And Resorts Phoenix Sprint Stakes (Group 3) at the Curragh. Successful in the Betfair Sprint Cup at Haydock last season, the Mick Appleby trained colt had failed to add to that victory in four subsequent starts. Always to the fore here under Tom Marquand, the 5/4f headed Bucanero Fuerte inside the last 150 yards to post a one-and-a-quarter length win. It was a first winner in Ireland for trainer Mick Appleby. A return to Haydock looks the next port of call before a possible Breeders Cup bid at the end of the Flat season. Mick Appleby said: "He's done it well. We brought him here just to give him a bit more confidence really. I think he was just lacking a bit in confidence with the big races he's ran in. Now that he's got his head back in front hopefully he'll go and do it again. He's as good as ever. He's just got a bit more laid back like me! It's hard to win these races. There are a lot of good sprinters about. He's done it well enough. He only did what he wanted to do. There's a lot more there."
