The Lockinge is the big race in Britain on Saturday afternoon, although the Group 1 contest lacks an Irish runner on this occasion.

Aidan O'Brien sends out a trio of contenders at the Berkshire venue, however, and we're looking at those as the sole Irish raiders at British venues on Saturday.

  • Ides Of March

O'Brien has no Lockinge contender but Ides Of March represents Ballydoyle in the Listed Carnarvon Stakes over 6f.

Ryan Moore partners the Wootton Bassett colt, who was last spotted chasing home stablemate and star sprinter Whistlejacket on their respective comeback at Navan in this grade last month.

O'Brien could find out quite a bit more about the sprinting pecking order based on this run. He has been put in as favourite with most firms after being declared here, with Whistlejacket seemingly bound instead for the Goffs Lacken Stakes at Naas on Sunday.

Charlie Appleby's 101-rated Symbol Of Honour, Richard Hughes' useful all-weather winner Sayidah Dariyan and the twice-raced and unbeaten Mehmas colt Strong Warrior for Richard Fahey are amongst the plausible dangers to Ides Of March, while Wathnan Racing will be eager to see what Defence Minister can do with his only setback in three runs last season coming in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes at Newmarket.

    Genealogy

Another Wootton Bassett colt, Genealogy has been declared for the Trade Nation London Gold Cup Handicap, a deeply competitive handicap over a mile-and-quarter won last year by King's Gambit.

Genealogy had three runs last season, winning a mile maiden at Punchestown in the middle of those and then finishing well behind stablemate Delacroix in the Autumn Stakes at Newmarket. This will be his handicap bow and he's got a rating of 96.

There's more than £51k on offer to the winner and Genealogy doesn't appear to have been let in especially well by the assessor.

John & Thady Gosden could have a major say on this contest. They send out thrice-raced Frankel colt Ernst Blofeld, winner of a Kempton novice in April and having run a respectable race in Listed company at Newmarket over 1m2f this month. On that evidence a mark of 91 is manageable.

He has just over three lengths to find on Nebras and gets 6lb from his stablemate now, with Hollie Doyle on the top-weight and William Buick partnering Ernst Blofeld.

    Ecstatic

Completing the Irish interest at Newbury is the O'Brien-trained Ecstatic in the Listed Childwickbury Stud Fillies' Trial Stakes.

The filly put up her best effort on seasonal reappearance when second to One Look in the Group 3 Express Stakes at the Curragh over a mile but was a touch disappointing since upped to this trip at Navan in the same grade. More is demanded here.

Once-raced winners Likealot and Revoir for Ralph Beckett and Cecilia Star for Michael Bell join useful looking recruits like Winter's Song for Charlie Appleby and Wonder Star for William Haggas in a compelling contest.
