Blank day as Southwell and Sedgefield off

There will be no racing in Britain today either after both Southwell and Sedgefield were called off.

The all-weather meeting at Southwell has been abandoned due to snow.

An inspection was called for 10am earlier this morning when snow began to fall in the area.

While the track is currently raceable the surrounding areas have been deemed unsafe.

Clerk of the course Roderick Duncan said: "We've had to abandon.

"The track is raceable but everywhere else is covered in deep snow.

"The roads are treacherous and people are struggling to get to the track so it is a decision on safety ground."

Sedgefield has also been abandoned due to a frozen track.

Temperatures dipped well below freezing overnight and an initial check at 8am proved inconclusive.

Clerk of the course Charlie Moore looked again at 10am but conditions had not improved enough.

"We've gone I'm afraid," said Moore.

"It is just not warm enough, it is still below freezing and there is not sufficient time for the track to improve.

"It looks a good decision now anyway as it started snowing only minutes after we called it off."
