Blue Bolt well beaten behind Kathynmarissa There was to be no unbeaten season for Blue Bolt as Kathynmarissa led home a US-trained one-two in the Makers Mark Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf at Keeneland. Andrew Balding’s four-year-old had been the dominant force against her own sex in Europe this term but after four straight Group One victories, failed to live up to top billing stepping up in distance. Willie McCreary’s Jancis was the pick of the European runners in third, but the spoils went the way of Chad Brown’s leading American contender, who had denied Stuart Williams’ Sunlit Uplands at Belmont last time out. Ridden confidently by Jose Ortiz, Kathynmarissa flew home strongly to nip past Graham Motion’s E. P. Taylor Stakes winner Gimme A Nother at the finish. Balding said of the Juddmonte-owned Blue Bolt: “It’s the end of a long season and she has done us proud. “She got a bit upset in the gate which is unlike her, but you never know until you try it when bringing a horse here. “It would be great to have her for another year, but that’s down to the owners to decide.” A proud McCreery said of Jancis: “She’s run a blinder and wouldn’t have been far away if things had worked out for her. She wasn’t sharp enough to hold her position early and got shuttled back too far. “Billy (Lee) thought Blue Bolt would take her into the race, but she hasn’t.” Meanwhile, Brown said of his winner: “You have to have mile-and-a-quarter stamina to run this trip. Jose knows this filly and knew enough not to give up on her. He got clear sailing and she picked up the bit again and really came home. “In the most sportsmanship way it was a personal pleasure to beat the Europeans because (on Friday) it wasn’t a good day for the Americans on their home turf. “You can have great form, but you have to have tremendous stamina to get this trip.”
