BOBBYJO RETIRED Bobbyjo, winner of the Martell Grand National in 1999, has been retired, it was reported today. The 11-year-old injured a leg in the Grand National Trial Handicap Chase at Fairyhouse last month and the decision was made to end the gelding`s career on veterinary advice. Bobbyjo became the first Irish-trained winner of the National since L`Escargot in 1975 when scoring at Aintree for father and son team Tommy and Paul Carberry. He also won the 1998 Irish Grand National, beating Papillon. Trainer Tommy Carberry told the Racing Post: 'Bobbyjo gave us some great days. 'He was a big favourite with our whole family and and obviously Aintree and Fairyhouse provided the highlights and many happy memories.'
