Brexit backers left disappointed at Newbury

Anyone taking a plunge on Brexit on Thursday evening was left disappointed as the topically-named filly could only finish sixth at Newbury.

Trained by Pat Phelan and owned by Tony Smith and The Undecided partnership, the two-year-old went to post for the Win Races With Jonathan Portman Novice Auction Fillies' Stakes.

Quite well supported in the market and sent off at 6-1, she broke well and travelled nicely, looking poised to challenge before her run petered out.

Top honours instead went to Funky Footsteps (25-1), trained by Eve Johnson Houghton.

Phelan said in the build-up to the race that her owner was "politically aware" and "had the name picked out from a long way off".

He added: "I am not so sure it reflects a political persuasion - it is more about having a name that would be topical at a particular time."
