British win in Arlington Million

Debussy swooped late under William Buick to claim the scalp of Gio Ponti and land the Arlington Million.

Gio Ponti was sent off an odds-on chance to defend his Arlington title but Buick produced John Gosden's charge with a perfectly-timed run in the Grade One event.

Debussy's stablemate Tazeez, who had reared at the start, was always prominent and he turned into the straight a clear leader while Buick was biding his time.

Gio Ponti switched wide and launched what appeared to be a winning run down the centre of the track but Buick, who had encountered some trouble two furlongs out, got an opening on the rail and he made full use of the space.

Debussy responded to his every call and flew in the final few yards to collar Gio Ponti by half a length with Tazeez holding on for third to top an excellent day for Gosden.

"I thought, 'Oh, no, I have so much horse, but I'm not going to have enough room'," Buick told www.bloodhorse.com.

"But then the hole opened and we got it."

Gosden added: "He had nowhere to go. I think they just tired the last part and he dashed up the rail and has done it really well. I've been trying to win this race for 28 years."

Of Tazeez, Gosden told www.drf.com: "I thought he'd get caught because of the break. He regularly beats the other horse at home."

Luca Cumani's Summit Surge, the third British-trained runner, finished fifth under Kieren Fallon.
