Canford Cliffs to be scoped Canford Cliffs is to be scoped following his disappointing display in the Prix Morny at Deauville on Sunday. Richard Hannon's juvenile went in to the French Group One with a huge reputation having annihilated his rivals in the Coventry Stakes, but the acceleration that was so evident at Royal Ascot appeared to be lacking. Jockey Richard Hughes was hard at work from halfway and while he was eventually only beaten half a length into third by Brian Meehan's Arcano and home runner Special Duty, Hannon feels there must have been something amiss. "Canford Cliffs was obviously disappointing and we are having him scoped," the trainer told his website, www.richardhannonracing.tv. "He did not look the same horse that he was at Royal Ascot and hopefully we will find that something was amiss. "It is always nice when you find a reason and while we are taking nothing away from Arcano, we know our fellow is better than that." Hughes echoed Hannon's sentiments, adding: "There was no fire in his belly. He jumped and travelled well but, though I managed to get to the front, the acceleration that is his hallmark was missing. "I just hope something comes to light."
