Canova win hurts bookies

Antonio Canova landed one of the biggest gambles of the season and gave Bob Jones his biggest success in thrilling fashion under `handicap king` Francis Norton in the William Hill Great St Wilfrid Stakes at Ripon today.

The chestnut gelding was a 10-1 chance in the shops this morning but was the medium of heavy support with the sponsors and, opening up at only 6-1 on-course, continued to attract a flood of money and started 7-2 favourite.

David Hood of William Hill confirmed: 'It has been very expensive! We have done six figures in the shops alone.'

A great roar went up from the packed stands as Norton brought him with a strong burst to collar Banjo Boy with 100 yards to run and beat him half a length with the fast-finishing Abbajabba a similar distance away in third.

It was a very emotional moment for Newmarket-based Jones who, when asked `was this the plan?`, replied with a smile: 'It was the plan to come here last year but he pricked a foot on the morning ofthe race!'
