Trainer Sonny Carey registered his first career double today, with Jackie Mullins’ Cause For Comment (15/8f) completing the feat in Downpatrick’s concluding Boardsmill Sires Maiden Hunters Chase under the owner’s son Patrick Mullins.

Runner-up behind a stablemate in last year’s renewal, Cause For Comment made most of the running in today’s race and held on well to score by six lengths from West Of Idaho for the Grand National-winning jockey.

Ex-amateur jockey Carey, who also operates a pre-training business and was earlier successful with the Sandra McCarthy-owned Better Times reported “that is brilliant, I’m delighted and the owners and whole (Mullins) family have been very good to me.

"I think Cause For Comment is a better horse this year as he was only five last year and has improved a lot. Today was a good race for a maiden hunters chase, so it is great.

"He was idle in front but had a good man on his back. I leave plans to the jockey, he picks those.”
