Causeway off the mark second time up The Aidan O'Brien trained Causeway came forward from a promising debut effort to run out a game winner of the opening Bermingham Cameras Irish EBF (C & G) Maiden at the Curragh. Fourth on his introduction at Gowran Park last month, the 11/8f chased newcomer Iron Lily for the first couple of furlongs here. Coming through to lead before halfway, the Wootton Bassett colt was strongly pressed by both Iron Lily and Loch Gamhna at the two-furlong pole. However, showing plenty of resolution, Causeway found that bit extra in the last 100 yards, keeping on strongly for a two-and-a-quarter-length success. Winning jockey Wayne Lordan said: “It’s deep ground. The wind is strong in your face going to the start but coming back it’s behind so that’s a help. “He’s a lovely, big, scopey horse. He’s laidback. He had a lovely run in Gowran and he was staying on well. “Even though he was coming back a furlong we thought the way the ground was today, up here, you’d have to stay well and he obliged. “It’s tough going and suited this fella because he’s a horse that will stay well. “He went forward down past the two and then he felt like he parked a bit. There was something came on the stand’s side and he actually went forward again so I’d say it was company he was waiting for.” Additional reporting by Gary Carson.
