Championship Could Undergo Overhaul

The format of the Flat jockeys' championship is being reviewed by the racing authorities despite Saturday's breathless conclusion to the 2007 race capturing the imagination of the public in recent weeks.

Jamie Spencer and Seb Sanders shared the honours with 190 winners each after a topsy-turvy finale at Doncaster.

Yet officials at the British Horseracing Authority and the Jockeys' Association are already discussing alternative options, including whether all races should count equally for scoring purposes.

Josh Apiafi, chief executive of the Jockeys' Association, said: 'Nothing's going to change in the near future, but I think you've got to look at everything over a period of time and the jockeys' championship has been decided the same way for the last 100 years or so.

'And with the expansion of the fixture list to around 1,500 races over the last five years, there comes a time when you're going to have to go back and review it. We've got to look at the bigger picture.'

Apiafi is also keen to stress no snap decision will be made and the opinions of everyone affected will be heard.

'We'll look at what they do elsewhere but also make our own decisions,' he told At The Races.

'We'll talk to everyone in the industry and take views from people like Seb and Jamie, as they all have different opinions.'

Following such a mentally and physically punishing push for the 2007 crown, Spencer has intimated he will not pursue championship honours next season if it requires such exertion.
