Channon Claims German Glory

Royal Power battled to victory for trainer Mick Channon and jockey Chris Catlin in the German 2000 Guineas in Cologne.

Runner-up in the Italian equivalent last month, Royal Power made no mistake this time as he hit the front a furlong out and held the strong-finishing Aspectus by a head.

Lord Of England stayed on for third while the other British raider, Chief Commander, shared fourth place with Sovereign Dancer.

Catlin said: 'Royal Power is a very good horse, I thought I had a very good chance.

'I have been to Germany several times before but I've never won here.'

Jimmy Quinn partnered the Jane Chapple-Hyam-trained Chief Commander and he was delighted with the colt's performance.

'We are totally happy with him, that was his best performance,' said the rider.

Sir Mark Prescott's Souvenance put in a brave performance to finish third in the Group Two Schwarzgold-Rennen.

Seb Sanders tried to make all aboard the Hernando filly but she was just caught in the closing stages as Quelle Amore and Nordtanzerin came through.

'We are delighted although it was not the plan go make the pace,' Sanders said.
