Mick Winters is eyeing up further big race success with stablestar Chatham Street Lad and reports the gelding ‘in great form’ ahead of the Listowel Festival.

The colourful Kanturk trainer is aiming the Beneficial gelding at the €150,000 Guinness Kerry National on September 22 but is looking to the skies for some help.

“Chatham Street Lad is ready if the ground is soft. He’s in great form,” said Winters. “He’ll be entered for the Kerry National if the ground is safe.”

Chatham Street Lad was switched to fences following a 15 months absence last season and got on a real roll over the larger obstacles highlighted by a blistering 15 lengths victory in the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

The nine-year-old, currently rated 151 over fences, won four races in total last term and was last seen landing the Grade 3 Hugh McMahon Memorial Novice Chase at Limerick in March.

Winters added, “If the water comes in Listowel we might do a bit of damage. It’s a lucky track for us and we should have a few to run during the week.”

Judging on previous experience he’s unlikely to be disappointed as the last six renewals of the Kerry National have been run on either soft or heavy ground.
