Noel Meade is hoping for rain for Thedevilscoachman ahead of the Grade 1 Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse on Sunday.

The Elusive Pimpernel gelding opened his chase account at Galway in soft ground in late October and Meade wants similar ground for his charge this weekend.

JP McManus' gelding, a Grade 2 winner over hurdles last season, will only line up in the extended two-mile-three contest if the Tu Va handler feels the ground is suitable.

The description is currently yielding, yielding to soft in places.

"For me at the moment, the biggest worry is the ground. If it is not soft, he won't go," revealed the

"I presume he will be declared and we will see. We won't chance him on anything unless it is soft.

"He's a decent horse, but he'd want to be a good horse to have a chance in this! It is a real good one (renewal).

"There again, he has to learn how to do his job and it is a nice track to go around if the ground is soft.

"He's in good shape."
