The Queen had to settle for second again at Royal Ascot as Bold Sniper was passed inside the final furlong by Contributer in the Wolferton Handicap.

Just 24 hours after Estimate went down fighting in the Gold Cup, Bold Sniper was favourite to go one better for Sir Michael Stoute and Ryan Moore.

In what was a bit of a messy race Contributer (9-1) was settled stone last by George Baker, who had never previously ridden a Royal Ascot winner, and he showed a splendid turn of foot to overhaul the leader and score by half a length.

Trainer Ed Dunlop had endured a miserable first half of the season, with many of his horses suffering from a bug, and Contributer was stuck in the mud at Sandown last time out.

There was a length and three-quarters back to third-placed Cafe Society, who will now head back to Australia with new trainer Gai Waterhouse.

Baker said: "I've had so many seconds here I thought it was never going to happen, but it's fantastic to win one.

"This horse ran on very heavy ground at Sandown behind Noble Mission. If he hadn't run there, he'd have been a lot shorter in the betting.

"It was a good performance. I was drawn very badly and Mr Dunlop told me to ride the race as it happened. I took my time and it all went to plan."

American owner George Bolton added: "This is the highlight of my racing career. To come over to Royal Ascot and win a race is very exciting. We've had some nice horses (in America), but not in 20-horse fields turning for home! I'm so proud of him (Baker). I thought he was too far back, but he's given him the perfect ride."

Dunlop said: "This is a big deal. It's been a tough year. This is George's first horse in England and he's won at Royal Ascot, so I'm delighted for him and the horse.

"We've always thought a lot of him. He was second to Magician in the Dee Stakes and ran very well against Noble Mission at Sandown.

"He carried a lot of weight today, he's a Group horse. He's come from last and he's a good horse. He was always my best two-year-old."

Hall Of Mirrors (14/1) was the only Irish trained runner in the race and he finished a respectable fifth for Aidan and Joseph O'Brien.
